People testing negative for COVID-19 but showing symptoms should be treated: Experts

Test results may come out 'negative' even if one has contracted Covid-19, experts have warned, advising that the ones showing symptoms must be treated without waiting for a confirmatory test to prevent aggravation of the infection. There have been several cases where patients showing clinical symptoms of COVID-19 have tested 'negative' for the virus multiple times. They were confirmed positive after repeated tests, doctors said. "The general perception of the experts now is that a high degree of suspicion arising out of the clinical symptomatology and the CT scan reports should be the guiding factor for treatment rather than relying only on the RT-PCR test which has a sensitivity of only 70 per cent," PTI quoted Dr Neeraj Gupta, professor in the Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, as saying.

Earlier this month, a 26-year-old junior resident doctor, who had Covid-19 symptoms, died after he had tested negative for the virus twice. According to the family, he started experiencing coronavirus-like symptoms around 10 days ago and had complained of throat pain and cough. “We took him to a chest specialist. An X-ray was performed and we were told he has a chest infection. We were under the impression that it was nothing but viral fever. But he kept saying the symptoms were not of chest infection as he was having shortness of breath,” his brother said.

India coronavirus numbers explained: As Karnataka overtakes UP, another lockdown in Bangalore

After Pune, it is now the turn of Bengaluru to go in for a fresh round of complete lockdown. The city would be shut down for a week between July 14 and July 22, in a bid to contain the rapid spread of the novel Coronavirus that has made Karnataka the fastest-growing state in the country right now.

On Saturday, the state reported close to 2,800 new cases and overtook Uttar Pradesh to become the state with the fifth-highest caseload in the country. Probe ordered after Telangana man carries Covid-19 dead body in auto-rickshaw

In violation of COVID-19 norms, relatives of a deceased coronavirus-infected patient at Nizamabad in Telangana allegedly carried his body in their own autorickshaw for burial after they managed to secure it from the state-run government hospital with a relative's help. As part of COVID-19 guidelines in disposing of those succumbing to the infection, the bodies are sent in an ambulance with a police escort, he said. However, the family members of the patient, who owned an auto, took the body, saying there would be a delay in the arrival of an ambulance, the official claimed.

DME Dr. Ramesh Reddy called it a serious issue and ordered a probe. "The superintendent is instructed to file criminal cases on those staff who were involved in handing over the body. All the Hospital superintendents are instructed to strictly follow the Guidelines and such incidents should not be repeated in the public interest," a release from his office said.

Coronavirus India LIVE Updates:

Also, lockdown restrictions have been announced in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Pune, amid a surge in the number of cases. Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state with 2,30,599 cases including 9,667 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,26,581 cases and Delhi at 1,07,051 cases.

Meanwhile, notwithstanding the ICMR’s ambitious timeline to produce a Covid vaccine, officials and scientists from CSIR, the Department of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology on Friday told a Parliament panel that no vaccine appears possible before early next year, it was learnt.

Globally, over 12 crore people have been infected with the virus and 5,56,383 have died. The World Health Organisation has formally acknowledged the possibility that the novel coronavirus can remain in the air in crowded indoor spaces, where “short-range aerosol transmission… cannot be ruled out”.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday (July 9) published an updated version of its March 29 scientific brief, ‘Modes of transmission of virus causing COVID-19: implications for infection prevention and control (IPC) precaution recommendations’, which it said included “new scientific evidence available on transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19”.

In the brief, the WHO has formally acknowledged the possibility that the novel coronavirus can remain in the air in crowded indoor spaces, where “short-range aerosol transmission… cannot be ruled out”.

The updated brief has come three days after a group of 239 scientists from 32 countries published a commentary titled ‘It is Time to Address Airborne Transmission of COVID-19’, in which they issued an “appeal to the medical community and to the relevant national and international bodies to recognize the potential for airborne spread of COVID-19”.

India coronavirus numbers: A quiet surge in Odisha

While the rapid rise in the novel Coronavirus infections in Karnataka and Telangana has been attracting attention, Odisha has quietly started to show a big surge again. Odisha had first gained prominence around the second week of May when the first batch of returnees from other states, mainly Gujarat, had begun to test positive for the disease in a big way. At that time, it had been one of the fastest growing states in the country. The state had slowed down significantly after that.

But in the last one week, there has been big increase in the numbers reported by Odisha. Close to 4,000 new cases have been discovered in the state during this time, with the state total now touching 12,000. The current growth rate of confirmed cases in Odisha (seven-day compounded daily growth rate) is 5.71 per cent, only behind Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, and much higher than the national growth rate of 3.45 per cent.

Explained Ideas: Why dexamethasone, and not remdesivir, deserves India’s attention for Covid treatment

Reliable information is key to tackling any outbreak and nowhere is it more crucial than in the management of the ongoing pandemic, says Ganesan Karthikeyan, a professor of cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

However, the sheer volume and variety of information being made available make it difficult to judge which bits are true and which hyperbole.

“The consequence of all this is impaired judgement, misplaced beliefs and distorted priorities. The run on pharmacies for hydroxychloroquine (triggered by mere speculations) that we witnessed a few weeks ago is a prime example,” writes Karthikeyan.
