  • He was allegedly staying at a friend's house where the girl also was staying

Champion boxer Marc Bargero, who fought the likes of Anthony Mundine in his heyday, is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Police claim the 15-year-old woke up during the alleged assault, which police allege occurred on June 6 inside a home in Belrose, in Sydney's northern beaches.

Bargero was reportedly friends with the homeowner, whose teenage daughter invited the young girl over for a sleepover.

The 51-year-old was arrested the night after the alleged incident, but released pending further inquiries, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

'Following further inquiries, the man was re-arrested at Wyong Police Station on Wednesday. He was charged with having sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16,' police said in a statement on Thursday.

Police have allegedly categorised the alleged offence as 'serious'.

If convicted, the Sydney Morning Herald suggests he will 'likely be given a custodial sentence'.

Bargero was granted conditional bail to appear in court again in August.

His bail conditions include not contacting the alleged victim, her friend or the girl's mother.

He is also not to consume alcohol or drugs and surrendered a $10,000 surety, while another 'responsible person' forfeited an additional $5,000 surety.

He must also stay at his Wyongah home on the Central Coast and not be in the company of any person aged under 18.

Court documents reveal he has never been convicted of a crime.

Bargero competed in a total of 61 bouts as a light-heavyweight boxer, winning 42 of them.

His most well-known fight was against Mundine in February of 2001, when he lost by total knockout.

The 51-year-old competed in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, South Africa and Japan during his career.

He has not competed professionally since 2010.
