GURUGRAM: To improve the standard of education in schools, the state government has decided to restart Class 8 board examination in all government schools under Haryana School Education Board (HSEB). The education department has asked the board to gear up for conducting the examinations for students of Class 8 along with that of classes 10 and 12 from 2021.
According to officials in the education department, till 2009 HSEB used to conduct board examinations for Class 8 students. However, after the Right To Education (RTE) Act came into existence, the board had to discontinue it.

In a recently issued order, the education department apprised the secretary of HSEB that the government has approved the amendment to the Haryana Free and Compulsory Right To Education Act 2011, and has allowed the annual examination for all Class 8 students in government schools across the state.
The department further announced that the students who do not obtain passing marks will be promoted to Class 9 and at the same time be provided with remedial teaching, additional support material and additional practice material to help them take two supplementary examinations (in each subject).
“By bringing the necessary amendment to the RTE Act, the government has decided to allow the Haryana School Education Board (HSEB) to conduct annual examinations of all Class 8 students of government schools across the state. In case a student doesn’t score minimum passing marks in any subject, he or she will not fail. They will, instead, be promoted to Class 9 and get two more chances to clear those subjects. Teachers and schools will give special training and guidance to such students, as the focus is to improve their performance and not burden them with exam pressure,” said an education department official.
Also, proper arrangements will be made for continuous and overall evaluation and students will be put in different class sections on the basis of student assessment tests, the letter read.
The department has asked the HSEB secretary to take necessary steps in relation to the board exams with immediate effect and give an action taken report.
Restarting board exams for Class 8 has been one of the prime agendas of the BJP government in the state. In 2015, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had announced his government’s intention to restart the examinations. For the past three years, the board has written numerous letters to the government, reminding them of the commitment made by the CM.
However, it was only during this year’s Budget session that the government finally declared that starting from the year 2021, there will be board examinations in the state for Class 8 students as well.
