Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) weather observatories in Santacruz and Colaba recorded the heaviest rainfall during this monsoon season that crossed the 1,000mm mark on Wednesday. Till the upcoming weekend, the weather officials have issued a green alert for Mumbai along with Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar.

On Wednesday, the rainfall became lower in intensity after the city witnessed an active monsoon downpour over the past weekend, which continued for the first two days of the week. The city remained dry throughout while some light rainfall was recorded with not more than two isolated heavy showers in some parts of the city. The Indian Meteorological Department’s observatories in Santacruz and Colaba recorded an average spell of 5.4mm and 11.8mm which falls under the light rain classification.

In a span of 24 hours which ended on July 8 at 8.30am, Colaba and Santacruz received around 58mm and 58.3mm of moderate rainfall respectively.

Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr Madhavan Nair Rajeevan took to twitter and wrote about the break or interruption in the monsoon spell this season. “After an active spell over Maharashtra and Gujarat, monsoon to be weak over most parts of the country, kind of monsoon break. Activity will shift to east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and North East Region during next 5-6 days,” Rajeevan tweeted.

The stock of water in the catchment area of the lakes touched the mark of 2.53 lakh million litres which was 17.50% more than the required measure. Previously, the water stock in the area was around 2.04 lakh million litres or 14.13 per cent per day. Mumbai’s Tulsi lake, which is the smallest, recorded maximum spells of 112mm on July7-8 while the Bhatsa lake, the biggest, witnessed 63mm of rainfall. For the city to go without a water cut for the remaining year, the stocks required for supply of water is 14.47 lakh million litres by October 1. Around 3,420 million litres of water is supplied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on a daily basis.
