JAIPUR: Covid-19 is assumed to be a disease affecting most of the people having lung ailments, but the figures of the state government of death audit of Covid-19 patients shows a different trend. The percentage of persons who died of Covid-19 with lung diseases as co-morbid condition is much less than the percentage of Covid-19 patients who died having heart diseases, kidney diseases, diabetes as underlying diseases. However, it has also been confirmed that not all the deaths happening had comorbid conditions. Thirty percent of the Covid-19 patients died in the state, did not have any comorbidity, the health department report on Covid-19 deaths shows.
According to the health department’s reports of deaths happening in the state due to Covid-19 till July 5, there were 15% of the Covid-19 deaths where the victims had lung diseases as a comorbid condition. “We have found in SMS hospitals, where 162 people died of Covid-19 that there is very few percentage of people who died of Covid-19 having lung diseases as comorbidity. The finding has come as surprise for those who initially believed that Covid-19 will kill maximum people who are suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, interstitial lung diseases or any other lung diseases,” said Dr Ajit Singh, one of the five-members of core group of doctors for Covid-19 treatment at SMS hospital.
In Bikaner too, the doctors have a similar kind of finding, where more than 25 people have died of Covid-19 till July 5. "It is not lung disease but diabetes and kidney diseases, which are found in the majority of the patients who died of Covid-19. Almost half of the people who died of Covid-19 had involvement of kidney and diabetes," said Dr Sanjay Kochar, nodal officer (Covid-19), PBM hospital.
However, the health department figures show that 46% of the people who had died of Covid-19 had heart diseases as comorbidities such as coronary artery disease and hypertension. Besides, diabetes was found in 38% of the patients who died of Covid-19. However, 35% of patients died of Covid-19, who had multiple comorbidities such as heart diseases, kidney diseases and diabetes.
"Since we have found that diabetes is one of the leading comorbidities found in patients who died of Covid-19, it is clear that people with low immunity to fight against the diseases are at higher risk of death. Diabetes weakens the immune system. It is also seen that Covid-19 virus directly affects beta cells in pancreas as a result of that it decreases insulin secretion. So, Covid-19 in itself can cause diabetes and weaken the immunity of such patients. Diabetes patients should take more protein so their immunity will be strengthened and control diabetes," said Dr Prakash Keswani, senior professor (medicine), SMS medical college.
However, 139 deaths happened due to Covid-19, who had no comorbidity, while the rest of 314 had comorbidities. Among those, 154 had one comorbidity, 111 had two, 39 had three, eight had four and two had five comorbidities.
