The trend that everyone will ditch their leggings for this season
Princess Diana running errands, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and Karisma Kapoor in Dil Toh Pagal Hai—some fashion moments have a lasting quality. It may not have escaped your notice, but the common theme in these three references are bike shorts—the skin-tight, saddle-ready, sports-cum-streetwear garment that made waves in 1980s and early 1990s. With fashion It-girls all over the world embracing the loved-to-be-hated trend, bike shorts caused quite the stir when they first hit the runway again in 2018 and picked up pace with approvals from names like Heron Preston, Chanel, Alexander Wang, MSGM, and Off-White. While we weren't quite sure of the longevity of the trend, if celebrity images are nothing to go by, it is here to stay for another moment. From Emily Ratajkowski to Kendall Jenner, and Janhvi Kapoor and Malaika Arora, the usual street style stars have been sporting the stretchy glute-huggers casually, out and about during the daytime. Looking for inspiration? Scroll down for a quick masterclass.
Monotone ensembles make for a fail-safe pick. While Malaika Arora wore an all-white look featuring a Puma sports bra and matching bike shorts to the gym, Jacqueline Fernandez took the black route for a Zoom shoot. Alaya F took things in an interesting direction by picking a pair of neon shorts with a black sports bra. On the international turf, Emily Ratajkowski, who has been an early adopter of the trend, picked a grey number. Janhvi Kapoor and Sophie turner have also given their nod of approval to the trend.
A pair of flaming red bike shorts by Adidas will brighten up your workout wardrobe. You can also wear them on those precious coffee pickups; just throw on a cropped tee and you are good to go. For days you feel like dressing up a bit more, consider H&M's neon pink shorts that'll instantly lift up your mood. For a virtual date night, trade your mini skirt with No Ka' Oi’s sequinned shorts and channel a more-is-more vibe. If you want something showcasing fun prints, then The Upside’s black number covered in a white star print is all you need to invest in. Inspired?
