KOLKATA: A little over one-third of
Coal India’s workers achieved almost two-third of normal average extraction levels for top soil & coal during the three-day strike that the unions called last week to oppose private competition.
“Though operations were subdued to a certain degree, performance of the company was better than anticipated during the strike. Workers’ attendance progressively increased from the first day of the strike over the three-day period, averaging close to 36%,” said an executive of the company.
Top soil removal is an important performance parameter as it exposes coal seams enabling production at short notice. Combined topsoil &
coal extraction during the period was 14.20 million tonnes, he said.
Despite the strike, the miner managed to maintain 44% of its
recent average production of 1.3 million tonnes a day. Coal despatch was 38% of its recent average of 1.4 million tonnes daily. Coal India produced a total of 1.72 million tonnes of coal and supplied 1.60 million tonnes to its customers during three days.
