India hit a new milestone today of 7 lakh confirmed or reported coronavirus cases, adding the last lakh in a matter of five days.

The country added over 22,000 Covid-19 cases in just 24 hours to peg the total tally at over 7.12 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on July 7.

Key Numbers:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 7,19,665
  • Active cases: 2,59,557
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 4,39,948
  • Deaths: 20,160
  • New cases in a day: 22,252
  • One-day recoveries: 15,515
  • One-day deaths: 467

Globally, India’s pace of increase is one of the fastest, with the total cases surpassing Russia’s 6.8 lakh. India now has the third largest outbreak, directly behind Brazil which has roughly 10 lakh more cases. U.S. has recorded the most number of cases so far.

Global Update

Beijing reported no new Covid-19 infections for the first time in nearly a month, but the pace of new cases from Tokyo to Australia is raising concerns about a fresh virus wave. U.S. cases are approaching 3 million. Atlanta’s mayor said she tested positive for the virus, while Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro is undergoing another test after showing symptoms.

Any vaccine would likely be limited in how long it can shield against infection, the top U.S. infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci warned.

Cases top 11.5 million; deaths exceed 535,000.
