Jadavpur UniversityKOLKATA: A staff of Jadavpur University in the research section has tested positive for Covid-19, forcing the varsity to shut down all departments, laboratories, offices except for emergency work till July 12. The civic body has been informed and an extensive sanitization of Aurobindo Bhavan, along with the campus, will be carried out this week.
The decision to close the campus will hit publication of terminal semester results, said secretary of Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association, Partha Pratim Ray. “The engineering department had concluded assessment of students. The university had resolved to bring out the results of students studying in the engineering faculty earlier since most candidates need to report to jobs in July,” said a JU faculty teacher.
Also, the state has instructed all universities to try to publish results by July 31. The Science and Humanities faculty of JU, like all other state-run universities, have agreed to adopt the 80-20 formula where 20% marks will be given for the internal assessment already conducted in current semester. “We need to collate data which is now delayed by almost a week,” said a teacher.
At Calcutta University, the Science Faculty Council meeting was held on Monday where many teachers raised protests against the university’s decision to approve the 80-20 formulasuggested by the state. “There is little scope for changing undergraduate terminal semester examinations due to extensive number of colleges affiliated. But for PG candidates, teachers wanted to test fourth semester (terminal semester) students on 100% weightage. Yet, the Faculty Council resolved for 80-20 weightage. There is little scope for a change,” said Parthiba Basu, general secretary, Calcutta University Teachers’ Association.
