Continuing its investigations into the alleged custodial deaths of father and son duo, the CB-CID team on Monday enquired around 10 persons, who are said to be volunteers deputed on COVID-19 duty at Sathankulam.

A detailed enquiry, which lasted for hours together, has been conducted with those volunteers, who were also alleged to have joined the Sathankulam police in thrashing the ill-fated traders P Jayaraj (58) and his son J Bennix (31).
CB-CID Inspector General K Shankar said some of the COVID-19 volunteers utilised by the Sathankulam police and relatives of the victims have been enquired. Twelve teams deputed by the CB-CID were tracking the investigation from various perspectives, he added. The CB-CID probed another Sub Inspector Pauldurai and five other police personnel attached to the Sathankulam station, sources added.
Five, including the suspended Inspector S Srithar, after being indicted on charges of double murder, would soon face the CB-CID enquiry as the agency would seek custody this week.
As for the Revenue Department, services of a total of 20 COVID-19 volunteers have been utilised in Sathankulam, especially in taking the reach of ration items and relief assistance to eligible beneficiaries. However, they were no way connected with the police personnel, sources said.
Meanwhile, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president and former union minister GK Vasan met the bereaved family at Sathankulam on Monday and consoled them. He offered a solatium of Rs 3 lakh to the kin.
A few days ago, R Sarathkumar, leader of All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) extended a sum of Rs. 5 lakh to the bereaved family after consoling them.
Leased car seized during arrest of suspended Sathankulam inspector Srithar; owner shocked
Sureshkumar of Chennai, the owner of a car, which was detained by the CB CID last week at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli during the arrest of suspended Sathankulam Inspector S Srithar, appeared for inquiry before the CB-CID team in Thoothukudi on Monday.
The car, which was said to be used by Srithar, was reportedly given on lease to one Ganesh Pandi by Suresh Kumar in 2017. Though things were going smooth for a year, suddenly Ganesh Pandi went out of contact. Repeated attempts by Suresh Kumar to contact Ganesh and know about the whereabouts of this car did not yield result.
Recently, after the custodial deaths case, Suresh Kumar got calls from journalists who traced him with the registration number.
Sources said after this Suresh Kumar somehow managed to contact Ganesh Pandi who told him that he gave it to his inspector Srithar who was his close friend.
But Suresh Kumar never expected the car to be seized by the CB-CID sleuths. So to get back his car, he came to Thoothukudi with all documents pertaining to his vehicle and also to appear for an inquiry before the CBCID on Monday.
