Palamu police on alert against illegal liquor trade after DGP’s tweet

Daltonganj: Palamu SP Ajay Linda asked police stations to be on alert to curb illegal liquor trade in the district. The SP’s directive came after Jharkhand DGP M V Rao on Saturday tweeted and asked citizens to provide tip-offs to police about liquor rackets. In his tweet, Rao had asked people to contact their local police stations or dial 100 to share any information regarding illegal liquor trade.
Talking to TOI on Sunday, Linda said, “We have instructed police stations in the district to be extra vigilant.” Areas under Chainpur, Harihurganj, Panki and Naudeeha police stations, among others, are infamous for manufacturing illicit liquor.
A social activist, Akhtar Zaman Khan, welcomed the move but said, “Brewing of illicit liquor is difficult to curb here because of the presence of thousands of mahua trees. The poor earn easy cash by developing alcoholic beverage from mahua flowers.”
Zonal IG Navin Kumar Singh said the police department is trying to nab bigger players in the illegal liquor business.
