So far 559 Central Railway employees and 313 Western Railway employees have been infected with the Coronavirus. Apart from this, their family members and retired workers have also been corona infected. Officials said that all have been admitted to the Jagjivan Ram Hospital of Western Railway and 86 of them have died. Of the 86 patients who died due to Kovid-19, 22 were current railway employees (14 from Central Railway and 8 from Western Railway) and the rest were family members and retired employees.

At present, 132 railway employees are being treated in the hospital apart from family members of staff and retired employees, officials said. Central and Western Railway is currently operating 700 trains with some special trains, freight trains, and limited passengers. Some rail unions claim that the number of infected railway workers has increased since June 15 when local train services were restored.

National Railway Mazdoor Union president Venu Nair said that the state government had approved only 15 to 30 percent presence in the offices but about 100 percent field workers in the railways have been working since the suburban train service was restored.

However, the zonal railway says that there is no connection between the increase in corona cases and the resumption of services. Shivaji Sutar, the chief public relations officer of the Central Railway, says that they are fully vigilant to prevent corona from spreading to railwaymen and passengers.
