BOSTON --- Rafael Devers was away from Fenway Park for the second straight afternoon.

The Red Sox third baseman was sent to Boston College for a workout with a select group of players. Mitch Moreland, Jose Peraza, Xander Bogaerts and Michael Chavis – regulars who figure to share the infield with Devers this season – all stayed on their normal schedules at the club’s primary Summer Camp home.

Pawtucket Red Sox manager Billy McMillon and Boston third base coach Carlos Febles have generally been in charge at the Harrington Athletics Village. The Red Sox have used the alternate site for pitchers requiring fielding work and more. Boston manager Ron Roenicke said Devers hit off a pitching machine Tuesday but declined to offer much clarity as to why one of his expected cornerstones had been separated from the main group.

"There are reasons sometimes why sometimes I do things," Roenicke said. "Sometimes I can tell you guys. Sometimes I can’t. But for right now that’s what we did.

"We’ll get him back over here and get him working out. I know he wanted to see some velocity today and we got a machine over there. We’re giving him some velocity in the cage.

"Tomorrow he wanted to see live BP – we’re giving him live BP. We’re just making sure we’re giving him what he needs to be ready. He wants to be in these intersquad games – not necessarily on defense, but we’ll get him at-bats."

Devers exploded to stardom last year, named an American League finalist for Outstanding Player ahead of the 2019 Players Choice Awards. He led the big leagues with 90 extra-base hits and 359 total bases, topped the Red Sox in hits, doubles and batting average and recorded just the 25th 30-homer/50-doubles season in Major League Baseball history.

Roenicke said Devers was expected to be back at Fenway on Wednesday. The club intends to play its first intersquad game on Thursday, possibly later in the day.
