Coimbatore police commissioner Sumit SharanCOIMBATORE: There is no room for any kind of rude behaviour with the public, Coimbatore police commissioner Sumit Sharan told police officers on Tuesday.
The commissioner was addressing more than 50 officers at the Police Recruitment School (PRS) on Tuesday. Sharan aimed to sensitize the gathering of assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) and inspectors of police on having a better rapport with the public. The meeting was organised in the wake of the Sathankulam custodial deaths.
He said due to Covid-19, everybody has a new way of life, which includes wearing masks, using hand sanitizers and maintaining social distancing.
“The city police are working well in the Covid-19 situation and we are getting positive feedback from the general public. However, we have to be very careful and conscious. The police must keep in mind the dos and don’ts during a vehicle check, arresting accused, and patrol and beat duty,” said Sumit Sharan.
“There is no room for any kind of rude behaviour while approaching the public. A single negative incident is capable of ruining the entire department's respect. There would be zero tolerance with respect to cops who behave in a rude or abusive manner with the public. We have to impress the public by way of our duty. Our cops should not be harsh with people,” he said.
Saran added that “If cops are not feeling well, they must tell their colleagues. Until the results are declared, the cops should maintain self -quarantine at home."
Addressing reporters, Sumit Sharan said the sensitizing programme's objective was to explain the officials their duties and responsibilities during the pandemic.
“The pandemic has caused a lot of stress for both the police and the public. The cops are advised to act according to the public's frame of mind,” he said.
Deputy commissioners of police L Balaji Saravanan, ES Uma and R Mutharasu were a part of this meeting.
