With more locals purchasing vitamin supplements, experts share that over-the-counter vitamin usage is detrimental for health. Rather than artificial supplements, experts direct locals to natural or Ayurveda/Siddha alternatives.
Chennai:
“Many are depending on vitamins at this time due to fear. Part of this is also due to misunderstanding on the consumers' end, and sales from companies. Many fail to realise that natural, household items like turmeric and ginger are immunity boosters and provide vitamins one needs,” said Dr R Prabha, nutritionist.
According to Dr Prabha, excessive consumption of vitamins can lead to mild cases indigestion, heartburns, mouth ulcers and loose bowel movements. Advocating for natural alternatives to artificial vitamins, Dr Prabha also recommended adding fresh citrus fruits to a well-rounded diet.
Meanwhile, the city has been looking into alternative immunity-boosters such as Kabasura kudineer, which is made from a combination of 14 different herbs and roots, according to Dr Varmakalai Aasaan Vijendran, a Siddha practitioner. “Made from natural ingredients, these drinks can enter the body systems with more ease. Kabasura kudineer is a type of immunity-boosting drink that helps lung infection and prevent coughs and colds, which is crucial during this time, and therefore it would be a better alternative than artificial vitamins,” he said.
However, both doctors warned of the harms of self-medication. “Something like Kabasura kudineer must also be taken in the right amount and based on an individual’s health history, just like vitamins. For best results, always consult a doctor to ensure the right dosage and timing,” said Dr Vijendran.
