Coimbatore man tries to steal money from ATM to buy liquor, arrested

COIMBATORE: The R S Puram (crime) police in Coimbatore on Monday arrested a 42-year-old man for attempting to steal money from an ATM on July 3.
T Vijayakumar of R S Puram told the police that he had been trying to withdraw money from the ATM by using his debit card but later realized that his account had no money. The man told the police that he had tried to steal money to buy liquor.
Police said the man had earlier owned a gold smithery unit and had faced a loss in his business. Following this, he became an alcoholic and was unemployed.
On Friday night, as his wife refused to give him money to buy alcohol, he stole her debit card. He was in an inebriated state as he tried to withdraw money from a Bank of India ATM.
He removed the screws of the ATM and attempted to take away a tray where the currency notes were stored. However, his effort was unsuccessful. The next day, the people who visited the ATM realised something was wrong and informed the police who registered a case.
The police collected the CCTV footage. A police team led by K Nagaraj managed to trace Vijayakumar on Monday. The man was remanded in judicial custody.
