FALL RIVER --- The Fall River Redevelopment Authority is considering purchasing two acres of waterfront property at 45 Anawan St. owned by Liberty Utilities.
The matter is on the RDA’s Wednesday night agenda and set to be discussed in executive session.
“We are an interested party and on behalf of the city,” said Joseph Marshall.
The property has contamination issues, said Marshall, so the board will have to consider remediation of the land.
The parcel is included in the RDA’s Waterfront Renewal plan, which means the board could choose to purchase the land at market price or proceed with an eminent domain process, according to Ken Fiola, vice president of the Bristol County Economic Development Consultants, who assisted the RDA with developing both waterfront plan and an urban renewal plan.
In May, Liberty Utilities purchased the former Homeland Builders property on Sykes Road in the Industrial Park for $5.8 million with plans to make it its local headquarters in the 72,280-square-foot facility on 8.63 acres of land.
At the time a Liberty Utilities spokesman said that the company would likely be putting its Anawan and Fifth street properties for sale.
BCEDC and Fiola helped facilitate the sale of the Industrial Park property.
Mayor Paul Coogan, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, has said the purchase of the Anawan property for public use could be a bonus for the city and waterfront redevelopment.
“This could make a link to Heritage State Park and local businesses that could make it work walking and to make it attractive,” Coogan said at the time.
