Pune: Suicide cases are increasing at an alarming rate during these tough times. On Monday, a 55-year-old COVID-19 patient committed suicide, in a COVID care centre in Pune.

The police have identified the deceased as Gundappa Sharanappa Shevare (55), a resident of Chaitraban Colony, in upper Indiranagar of Bibwewadi, Pune. A case of suicide has been filed at Kondhwa police station, which falls under the jurisdiction of Pune city commissionerate.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Pune Municipal Corporation officer shared, "Deceased Shevare and his son were transmitted with coronavirus. On July 4, they were undergoing treatment at Kondhwa based COVID care centre in the premises of Sinhagad institute, near Yewalewadi. Both, Shevare along with two others were kept in a room at the centre."

According to police, "The incident took place on Monday around 10 am at Yewalewadi. Sheware's three of his roommate patients went to another room for having breakfast. At that time, Sheware prefered to remain in his room and when their roommate returned back post breakfast and they were shocked to see him hanging on fan nop. The Centre medical officer informed us about this incident and we rushed to the spot. Later conducted post panchanama and mortal was sent for post mortem. Primary investigation reveals its suicide due to strangulation, we are probing it."
