At least 1,252 people in the city have tested positive since Tuesday last. Many believe the city is emerging as the new "hotbed" of Covid-19. The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district has the highest number of cases among all districts in the state.

Last week, the Assam government had announced a stringent 14-day lockdown in Kamrup (Metro) district after around 700 people without travel history tested positive since June 15.
Kamrup (Metropolitan) deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said, "In view of the detection of Covid-19 positive patients at the Raj Bhavan campus in Guwahati city under Kamrup Metropolitan District, in the interest of maintenance of public hygiene and to prevent further spread of Covid-19 virus, the Raj Bhavan has been declared as a containment zone."
He said it has been directed to seal the area immediately.
"Any unauthorized entry and exit into the zone is barred till the area is declared safe as per guidelines of the ministry of health and family welfare, GOI. Any movement of any unauthorized individual and vehicle within the notified area is also prohibited with immediate effect," Pegu added.
A Raj Bhavan source said, "The two Grade-III staff were found Covid-19 positive on Saturday. They were in the line of duty and testing was done on Wednesday along with the others office staff."
The source also said that testing has been done among all staff and people, including the governor, at the Raj Bhavan.
