When cops went to investigate an accident between a car and an autorickshaw at Vijay Crossroads early on Saturday, the last thing they expected to find was a vehicle stashed with bottles of alcohol.

Police seized 48 IMFL bottles and 139 beer cans from the badly damaged car that the driver had abandoned on the spot following the accident.

The incident took place around 6 am on Saturday. Odhav resident Umashankar Sharma was driving his auto-rickshaw with his friend in the back seat.

He was going from Helmet Circle to Income-Tax Circle, and had just crossed Vijay Croassroads when a speeding Swift car rammed into his vehicle from behind.

The autorickshaw overturned. Sharma received injuries to his head, leg, and also fractured a finger on his right hand.

His friend also suffered minor injuries in the accident. The driver left his car on the spot and fled. When the police reached the spot, they found a consignment Indian Made Foreign Liquor as well as beer cans inside the vehicle. The IMFL bottles and beer cans were worth Rs 1.31 lakh in total.

Acase has been filed at B-traffic police station and a case under prohibition has been lodged at Gujarat University (GU) police station.

GU PI H M Vyas told Mirror, “Prima facie it seems that the driver could not start the car after the accident and was forced to leave it behind and flee. We towed the car to the police station.”

He added, “We are trying to establish the identity of the driver and are trying to ascertain whether he is the owner of the car. Once the driver is caught, it will be cleared from where the consignment of alcohol was purchased and the destination it was being ferried to. We are checking CCTV footage of the spot.”
