MUMBAI: Covid-19 cases in Thane breached the 10,000 mark on Saturday. The new patients included a woman corporator and 24 policemen.
Thane has maintained its dubious lead in Covid cases among satellite towns, with 10,358 patients and 367 deaths. On Saturday, Thane recorded 408 cases and 17 deaths.
In light of the grim situation, state cabinet minister Aditya Thackeray interacted with civic chiefs of Thane, Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhayander and Kalyan-Dombivli. In the meeting held at TMC, Thackeray took stock of the coronavirus situation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
"We are increasing the number of laboratories, oxygen concentrators and testing in Thane. We also plan to equip ambulances and review the number of jumbo facilities here," said Thackeray, while requesting people to stay indoors.
As Covid numbers multiplied in the lake city from 389 cases in May first week to 3,800 in June and have now crossed 10,000, activists and corporators have questioned the administration's ability to keep the virus in check. Additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Herwade assured the TMC is well prepared to handle the situation.
Among the satellite towns under lockdown, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation is the only municipality to have recorded more than 500 single-day positive cases for three consecutive days. On Saturday, it reported 555 cases and five deaths, taking the toll to 135 and total cases to 8,601.
After a full lockdown began in NMMC on Saturday, 257 positive cases were reported, taking the total count to 7,602. The death toll touched 239 with seven succumbing to the virus on Saturday. NMMC commissioner A B Misal, too, has requested people to stay indoors.
In Vasai-Virar where a total lockdown has not been imposed, 220 cases were reported. Testing has increased with 1,375 swabs collected on Saturday, when the deaths remained unchanged at 124.
The addition of 126 cases in Mira-Bhayander on Saturday was attributed to the lockdown. Civic officers said the recovery rate is now 73%. There were six deaths on Saturday, taking the toll to 158.
Panvel City Municipal Corporation recorded 135 fresh cases on Saturday, taking the total to 2,713. There were two deaths.
