Colleges fail to submit poor girl students’ information, face fire

Gurgaon: Earlier this year, the state government had announced that no girl student from a financially weak background would be required to pay tuition fees up to the postgraduate level. The scheme, however, has been held up, with colleges across the state failing to meet several deadlines to submit details of students eligible for free education.
In a recently issued letter to the principals of all colleges in the state, the department of higher education pulled them up over the matter and asked them to submit the required details by Friday. Despite repeated reminders, several colleges have failed to submit the details, it said.
This is the fourth letter that the department has issued to colleges asking them to submit the details of all girl students belonging to poor families with an annual income of up to Rs 1.8 lakh.
“It was requested to supply this information within weeks’ time vide letter dated 05.05.2020 and even thereafter, near about two months elapsed... Due to the non-receipt of the information, the case is held up,” the letter read. Upon the submission of the details, the department will evaluate the eligibility and thereafter the consolidated list will be presented to the government.
According to officials from the department, all colleges were informed before the beginning of the new semester so the process would be completed on time. Several colleges, however, have failed to respond to the first letter, issued in May, and subsequent reminders.
“We’ve issued at least three reminders in the past two months. But the details have been submitted yet ,” an official from the department said.
