MUMBAI: Heavy rainfall was witnessed in the city since Saturday morning and waterlogging was reported at several places. The intensity of the rain increased at afternoon flooding many roads and forcing traffic diversion at some places.
According to BMC, they received waterlogging complaints from 10 places, mostly lowline areas and four wall collapsed, 32 tree fall incidents were reported on Saturday. BMC also received 10 short-circuit complaints but no injury was reported on these incidents.
Since afternoon it’s raining continuously causing waterlogging.
Sahar resident and former corporator Nicholas Almeida stated that rainwater from several nearby areas in Andheri and Vile Parle flows to the nallahs which joins the Mithi River. He said, “In case of heavy rains with high tide, the level in Mithi River increases and it does not accept the water from the adjoining nallah and airport runway area which causes flooding.”
The IMD has issued a red alert —- extremely heavy rainfall —- in Mumbai for Saturday and BMC have kept all its emergency services on alert to handle the situation. BMC has also deployed its machinery at lowline areas to clear accumulating rain water. BMC, also on high alert, is considering the fact that there will be 4.57 metres high tide around 11.38am.
The civic authority considers high tide above 4.5 metres during monsoon serious. If it rain heavily during the high tide level above 4.5 metre, it causes flooding in the city.
Monsoon water goes into sea through the city drainage system. During the high tide, the disaster management closes the floodgates to prevent sea water rushing into drain system. In such a situation, rainwater in drains doesn’t find outlet into sea and it flood streets, lowline areas in the city.
In the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Saturday, city's Santacruz observatory recorded 157.0 mm rainfall. The IMD's Colaba observatory recorded 169.0 mm rain during the same period. Several parts of the city received showers through the morning. "Rainfall in last one hour in Mumbai and around is moderate. Radar/satellite images indicate cloudy west coast, active monsoon. Another heavy rainfall day on Saturday," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
