A man has died after being bitten by a shark in waters near Fraser Island, off the Queensland coast.

Paramedics and an RACQ LifeFlight rescue helicopter rushed to Indian Head on the island's north-east just after 2pm on Saturday.

At the time, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said paramedics were working to treat a critically injured man in his 20s, reportedly a diver. RACQ LifeFlight's medical team was winched down to the patient to assist.

Just before 4.30pm, a QAS spokesman said emergency services were still working to treat the man but police later confirmed he had died.
