The Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, on Saturday, again appealed to the people to prevent the spread of COVID 19.

The state government has already begun an enquiry into an alleged scam involving a co-operative society that affected people from Colva and Majorda, Alemao added.

Speaking to the media at this office on Saturday, the Benaulim MLA urged the people to be even more careful as the number of COVID cases are
on the rise.

“It is my request to the people, especially, those with underlying conditions who are at a higher risk of catching the virus. At the same time, we also have to appreciate the doctors, nurses and medical staff who are working very hard. Earlier, I had said that the COVID cases would increase with the rains and had even asked for the lockdown to be extended till June 15. But, now, it seems that there is a spike in cases every day, and it is up to us to maintain social distancing and pray to God to save us,” he said.

Speaking about the co-operative society, Alemao said that the Minister for Co-operation Govind Gaude has already started an enquiry into the matter.

“The co-operative societywas the first in Curtorim, in 2018, then it opened  a branch in Loutolim and further in Majorda. The locals, including those from Colva, came to me asking for help. I raised the issue in the Assembly and the minister has started an enquiry into it. It is my opinion that the department’s own officials may be involved in allowing this cooperative society to operate,” he said.

On the issue of farmers’ demanding compensation for the land that has been acquired for development works along the Khareband-Benaulim road, the Benaulim MLA said that some owners of the land had willingly given  required NOCs while others were given offer of settlement which
was denied.

Alemao was accompanied by former Benaulim sarpanch Ashok Audi,  Benaulim sarpanch Ezlina Fernandes, panch members Felicia Fernandes, Menino Fernandes, Remmy Fernandes and others.
