Amidst the Corona crisis and tension with China, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi on Friday about the reservation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the states. Sonia drew the Prime Minister's attention to the denial of the reservation to OBC students in the seats being filled by NEET examinations in medical educational institutions in states and union territories.

Sonia wrote in the letter, 15% of seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribes, and 10% seats for Economically Weaker People (EWS) under the All India Quota in medical institutions of the Center and all states. However, the system of all-India quota for OBC students is restricted in central institutions.

He wrote, the order of the Center is not being followed in the states. According to data collected from 2017 by All India Federation of Other Backward Classes, OBC students have not been given reservation in medical institutions in the state and union territories for more than 11 thousand seats under the All India Quota. Not giving reservation to OBC students in medical institutions of the state is a violation of the Central Government's Order and the 93rd Constitution Amendment.

This is like preventing qualified OBC students from pursuing medical studies. Sonia also requested the central government to increase reservation for OBC students in the state's medical educational institutions and dental colleges in view of equality and social justice.
