JAIPUR: Sleuths of customs department have arrested fourteen Indian national passengers with an illegal possession of 31.998kg of gold worth Rs 15.67 crore from Jaipur airport on Friday. These passengers were caught from two different flights from UAE and Saudi Arbia, the Vande Bharat flights meant to bring back Indians.
According to the customs officials, the first arrest was of three passengers who came from Ras-Ul- Khema(UAE) to Jaipur while the second arrest was of eleven passengers who came from Riyadh(Saudi Arabia) to Jaipur.
“The three passengers brought 12 gold bars concealed in the emergency light battery slot which was nearly 9.339kg while other 11 arrived from Riyadh to Jaipur with possession of 22.6528kg of gold,” Vikas Jeph, additional commissioner of customs told TOI.
Officials claimed that this is the biggest ever seizure of gold in the year so far. Also, the officials were surprised with the fact that during this Covid-19 times when government of India has put its effort to bring back Indians gold smugglers are active.
The recovery of gold is been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. The passengers are arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act and are been interrogated.
