Private medical college keen on govt takeover

KOCHI: Not just the medical college at Wayanad, DM Education and Research Foundation (DMERF) is considering the handover of even its nursing and pharmacy colleges and its associated infrastructure to the Kerala government. This proposal is to support the local government to improve healthcare delivery and medical education in the backward district of Wayanad, said Dr Azad Moopen, managing trustee, DMERF.
“The terms and conditions will be finalized after the government appointed committee submits its report in three weeks,” said Dr Moopen, who has promised to donate Rs 250 cr to the state government out of the total expenses incurred on DM WIMS Medical College and associated institutions.
This is the first time during Covid that a private college in the state has come with such a proposal. State government that has been looking at setting up a medical college in the district has set-up a six-member committee to study the infrastructure and other aspects of the institutions. Two batches of MBBS graduates have passed from the institution.
The campus is set-up in a total built up area of 14 lakh square feet with 700 bed super-specialty hospital, a 100-bed specialty hospital, a pharmacy college and a nursing college. The medical college admits 150 MBBS students each year.
“Another new medical college by the state government would require substantial investments and minimum another 5 years to be functional. We think that DM WIMS can cater to the requirement of the government. We think that it is important that we join hands with the government in providing support to the needy local population,” added Dr Moopen.
DMERF has also requested the government to continue with the current staff who have been associated with the institutions for many years and have contributed to its success.
