One more elephant dies in Coimbatore forest division

COIMBATORE: A sick male elephant, aged around ten years, died in Sirumugai forest range of Coimbatore forest division on Friday morning.
The elephant was found struggling for its life in Pethikuttai beat on June 28. Forest department veterinary doctors administered fluids and attempted to save the male elephant.
The elephant managed to walk into the forest. However, it was found lying on the ground on June 29 evening.
Frontline staff of the forest department were not able to approach the sick elephant as there were a herd of elephant in the reserve forest.
The forest department gave treatment to the elephant from June 30 till July 2 and the doctors’ team did not notice any development in the elephant. The elephant was not able to stand, and it was lying on the ground.
Around 8am on Friday, the frontline staff attempted to monitor the elephant. They could not reach the elephant as a herd of elephant was present in the area. Around 11.45am, the frontline staff and forest department veterinary doctor Sugumar approached the elephant and came to know that it had died.
The exact cause of the death would be known after postmortem.
A total of 142 elephants died due to various reasons in Coimbatore forest division since 2011. As many as 15 elephants have died in the forest division since January.
Former school education minister and DMK leader Thangam Thennarasu posted a message on his Facebook on Friday stating that 12 elephants had died in the last ten days in Coimbatore forest division and why forest minister Dindigul Srinivasan had not ordered a detailed inquiry and why forest department top officials were silent over the death of wild elephants.
