LUCKNOW: It was just after 4am when chief minister Yogi Adityanath was woken up with a phone call about the killing of eight police personnel, including a DSP, in Kanpur district. Additional chief secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi broke the news to him and since then, the CM has been taking review every half an hour.

Sources said that the CM has issued strict instructions that the culprits in this case are to be caught and punished. In a tweet on Friday morning, Yogi Adityanath said: “I pay tributes to the eight police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Kanpur district. UP will not forget the immense courage and dedication of the martyred policemen and their sacrifice will not go in vain.”
Meanwhile, the CM also directed DGP HC Awasthi to take strict action against criminals, two of whom were gunned down in an encounter just hours later. He has also sought a report on the incident.
“Within minutes of being informed about the matter, the CM was in full command of the situation, directing the IG, ADG and ADG (LO) to leave for Kanpur. A forensic team from Kanpur has been deputed to the site of the incident and another expert team from Lucknow has been sent. The special task force has also been deployed. The primary focus of the government right now is to find the main accused in the matter,” said an official attached to the chief minister’s office.
In the early hours on Friday, eight policemen including a DSP, were killed by a gang of criminals when it had gone to arrest a history sheeter Vikas Dubey. Dubey, who was absconding till Friday morning, hails from Dikru village under Chaubepur police station in Kanpur district.
