Five youths fall 50 ft, drown at waterfall in Maharashtra's Palghar district

MUMBAI: Five local youths on a picnic despite lockdown fell off a 50ft deep waterfall and drowned, in Jawhar taluka of Palghar district on Thursday. Thirteen boys from Ambika chowk had gone to Kal Mandavi waterfall in Kelichapada-Kalsheti, around 7km from Jawhar city.
The force of the waterfall was strong due to rain. Around 3pm, Nimesh Patel, Devendra Phaltankar, Devendra Wagh, Prathamesh Chavan and Jai Bhoir, all aged 18-22, along with others reached the waterfall by dodging tricky paths. Five of them got dangerously close and friends told Jawhar police the five slipped and fell. The friends raised an alarm but no one was around.
Fire brigade personnel and rescue personnel from district disaster management cell fished out the bodies from different spots after around four hours. Firemen said the bodies were carried away in different directions as the current was strong. "We got the bodies as it was daytime and it was not raining," said a fireman. The bodies have been sent for autopsies.
The friends told police two of them were taking selfies and three others fell too when they tried to help.
