S P Velumani on Friday said 5,000 special
fever camps would be conducted in Coimbatore with the help of public health department and local bodies in the month of July. Swab samples will be collected from people with flu symptoms.
The minister convened a meeting on Friday with all department officials at the district collectorate.
After the meet, Velumani said people suffering from flu symptoms like fever and cold should report to fever camps. “Our doctors will collect the swab samples from people. We hope that this special fever camp will help us control the spread of
Covid-19 across the district,” said Velumani.
He added that since flights began operations on May 25, 131 flights arrived at Coimbatore airport from various destinations. As many as 19,161 passengers entered the district by air. Swab samples were collected from all passengers, and 111 tested positive. Of the 111 people, 46 belonged to Coimbatore and the rest were from other districts.
“So far, we have tested 60,282 people in Coimbatore district and 608 people tested positive. As many as 318 patients were treated and they were discharged from hospitals. Coimbatore now houses 287 patients,” Velumani said.
A total of 8,302 people, who returned from other districts and states, were under home quarantine and were closely monitored by the corporation, revenue, public health department and police officials.
He said the district has 400 beds at ESI hospital, 405 at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), 471 in taluk-wise hospitals and 240 beds at primary health centres (PHCs). Private hospitals have around 1,456 beds in total.
Upgraded PHCs have 13 beds and 713 beds in government hospitals are available for Covid-19 patients.
“The government has also set up 1,000 more beds at six places, including Codissia halls, for those who suffer from asymptomatic Covid-19. In all, Coimbatore has 4,685 beds,” said Velumani.
District collector K Rajamani, corporation commissioner Shravan Kumar, city police commissioner Sumit Sharan, Inspector General of Police K Periaiah, superintendent of police Sujit Kumar, district revenue officer Ramadurai Murugan and other officials participated in the meeting.
Later, Velumani visited Codissia trade fair complex where he inspected Covid-19 care centre.
