CHENNAI: One hundred and eighteen days after the first
Covid-19 case was reported in
Tamil Nadu, the state crossed the one lakh mark on Friday, with an addition of 4,329 cases. The total count stands at 1,02,721 cases. Fatalities in the state rose to 1,385 as 64 more deaths were reported.
Tamil Nadu is the second state in the country to cross the grim milestone. Maharashtra, which has more than 1.8 lakh cases, has crossed the
milestone on June 12, 96 days after it reported the first Covid-19 case.
Chennai, which is the worst-hit city in the state, recorded 2,082 new cases, taking its tally to 64,689 while 33 deaths took the city’s toll closer to 1,000. On Friday, the official toll reached 996.
Chennai’s adjoining districts Chengalpet recorded 330 cases, Kancheepuram had 121, Tiruvallur recorded 172 cases.
In the south, Madurai reported 287 cases while Theni recorded 126, Ramanathapuram had 73, Sivaganga registered 53 and Tirunelveli reported 41 cases.
In the West, Salem had 99 cases, Coimbatore had 37, while the numbers in Karur and Tiruppur was five or below. In the central region, Trichy reported 47 cases, Thanjavur had 13 while Ariyalur and Perambalur recorded zero cases. Among northern districts, Vellore reported 145 cases, Ranipet had 90 cases and Tiruvannamalai recorded 172 cases.
Six people who died had no comorbidities. Besides 33 deaths in Chennai, Chengalpet reported nine deaths, Madurai had eight, Ramanathapuram and Tiruvallur had three each, Villupuram had two and six other districts reported one death each.
At the end of the day, 2,357 people were declared cured and 42,955 people were still under treatment.
