New Delhi: India recorded more than 20,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the total count to 6,25,544. Testing numbers saw a rise with over 2.4 lakh samples having been tested, recording a positivity rate of 8.6%, marginally up from 8.3% recorded the previous day.
Active cases
India reported 20,903 fresh cases Friday morning, taking the total active cases to 2,27,439. This is the highest number of cases reported in a single day.
Daily tests
The total number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours stands at 2,41,576. India currently has the capacity to test around 2.5 lakh samples per day.
Mortality rate
In the last 24 hours, as many as 379 people died of Covid, taking the toll to 18,213. New data shows a little less than half of the Covid deaths until 2 July happen in people aged below 60 years, and 43 per cent of them had no comorbidities.
Positivity rate
Despite the highest number of positives reported, the increased testing kept the positivity rate within range at 8.6%. This is likely to increase over the weekend when testing dips.
Recovered cases
The recovery rate among Covid-19 patients has crossed 60%. It stands at 60.73% Friday. During the last 24 hours, a sharp rise of recoveries was observed with 20,033 patients having been cured, taking the cumulative figure to 3,79,891.
Total cases
The total cases now stand at 6,25,544. The last 1 lakh cases got added to the total in just five days.
High-burden states
Delhi: The national capital reported 2,363 positive cases and 61 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the city now stands at 92,175.
Gujarat: The state reported 681 fresh cases of Covid in the last 24 hours. The toll here is 1,886 now.
Maharashtra: The state reported 6,330 new cases and 110 deaths in the last 24 hours. The mortality rate stands at 4.38%.
Tamil Nadu: The state reported 1,191 new cases and 57 deaths in the last 24 hours. It continues to lead in testing.
Tests and positive cases
The top three states with high caseload continue to lead in testing, with Delhi having tested 20,822 samples, Maharashtra 27,953 and Tamil Nadu 32,456.
