MUMBAI: India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for the weekend, indicating heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. This will bring relief to the city.
South-west monsoon entered Mumbai on June 14, but there was only one intense spell of rain on June 18. Weather officials said an offshore trough from north Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast persisted. “Konkan region, including Mumbai, is likely to get heavy rain on July 2-3,” said K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
This week, except for Monday night, when the island city reported over 100mm, there has been very light rain on June 30-July 1. IMD Colaba recorded 6mm and IMD Santacruz 9.4mm. There is still a shortfall of rain.
