CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded 3,882 fresh Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the case tally to 94,049. However, only 39,856 people are still under treatment as they others have been cured of the infection. The state reported 63 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative toll to 1,264.
The state’s hotspot, Chennai, recorded 2,182 new cases, and the adjoining districts Tiruvallur (147), Kancheepuram (86) and Chengalpet (226) together recorded 459 cases. But epidemiologists say the growth of the contagion in the districts is increasing even more rapidly. On Wednesday, all districts barring Perambalur, recorded fresh cases. In south, Madurai recorded 297 cases and Ramanathapuram registered 100 cases. In the central region, Salem had 162, and Vellore logged 76 cases.
Of the 63 deaths, 41 were in Chennai, five in Tiruvallur, and two each in Kancheepuram and Chengalpet. Among southern districts Madurai recorded seven deaths, Ramnad had two and Theni had one. Pudukottai, Virudhunagar and Karur recorded one death each. While 10 people died within a day of admission, four were declared ‘brought dead’ by hospitals.
