MUMBAI: Hashmiali Mula, 57, an assistant sub-inspector attached to the Pydhonie police station in Mumbai, died due to Covid-19 early on Thursday. He is the 40th city policeman to have succumbed to the deadly virus so far. The number of police personnel who lost their lives to the pandemic in Maharashtra has gone up to 62.
Mulla, a south Mumbai resident, was to retire in three months. “He was suffering from hypertension,” said a senior officer. Mulla was admitted to the GT Hospital four days ago and was put on a ventilator on Wednesday, said the officer. The city police chief had in April exempted all the police personnel, who are above 55 years, from office duty. Mulla was at home since he was above 57.
He is survived by a married daughter and a 22-year-old son. Mulla was said to be a sincere policeman and was known for his discipline in the force.
While 2,252 police personnel in the city have recovered from Covid-19 so far, 551 are undergoing treatment at present.
