It may appear a small step to ban 59 Chinese apps by the government to express displeasure with China over its military action in Ladakh. But it reflects a larger effort to foil China's strategy of stealing data for both political and military purposes. While ‘military-civilian fusion’ programme in China has been happening in fits and starts and at a fairly basic level since Mao’s time, President Xi Jinping has ordered what he calls ‘deep fusion’. Sources said while the decision to ban Chinese apps would have an indirect, but significant impact on Chinese firms, the real task, a tougher one, at least at this point in time, would be to curtail Chinese venture capital in India’s tech startups.
