India has initiated an investigation on the imports of certain aluminium wires coming from Malaysia based on a complaint by
Vedanta Ltd and
Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd who have alleged that subsidised imports are causing material injury to domestic industry, and have requested for imposition of countervailing duty on imports of them.
The government will probe the imports of
Aluminium Wire /Wire Rods above 7 mm diameter, used in electrical and steel industries, from April-December 2019 (9 months) but will also cover the data of FY17-FY19.
The applicants alleged that producers/exporters of the goods in Malaysia have benefitted from actionable subsidies provided at various levels by their government, including the provinces and districts in which producers/exporters are located, and other public bodies.
“Consultation was held on June 29, 2020…the government of Malaysia denied existence/ applicability of certain programs and non-availment of some of the programme by producers/exporters of the product under consideration,” the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (
DGTR) said in a notification.
If it is established that subsidies by Malaysia are impacting domestic industry, the directorate would recommend the amount of countervailing duty, which if levied, would be adequate to remove the injury to the domestic industry, DGTR said.
