NEW DELHI: India registered the highest single-day Covid-19 deaths at 507 on Wednesday with Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu accounting for over 70 per cent of the fatalities, while 18,653 new infections were reported taking the total tally to 5,85,493, according to the Union health ministry data. This is the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 18,000. The country has seen a surge of 3,94,958 infections from June 1 till date.

Union food minister Ram Vilas Paswan said some states like West Bengal and Bihar are lagging behind in distribution of free ration under the PMGKAY and they should be more "sensitive" towards the poor during this Covid-19 crisis and take proactive measures.
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), announced as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package to help those affected due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, was earlier valid for a three-month period from April to June. The same has been extended for five months till November.
The Union health ministry said that 'Made in India' ventilators supplied to the states and UTs comply with specified requirements and have Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure mode.
The World Bank said it will provide USD 750 million budget support to 15 crore MSMEs in the country to increase liquidity access for viable small businesses impacted by Covid-19. The USD 750 million support is in addition to the USD 2 billion funding that the World Bank has already announced for the social and health sector.
The Union Ayush ministry said Patanjali can sell Coronil but only as an immunity booster, days after yoga guru Ramdev's company launched it as a medicine for Covid-19 and is now calling it a product to “manage” the disease.
Union minister Jitendra Singh said prompt administrative measures to control the spread of coronavirus saved India from slipping into a crisis situation. "India's fight against corona proved effective because of the early lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said Singh, minister of state for personnel.
As many as 118 patients have been admitted in the Covid care coaches of the Indian Railways so far, while 72 have been discharged, the national transporter said. On the requisition of state governments, the Railways has parked 960 such isolation coaches across five states.
Fifty two CISF jawans at a nearby camp have tested positive for Covid-19 over the past two weeks, following which a health officer has been tasked with surveillance, contact tracing and further quarantine measures.

Delhi: A Delhi government panel has recommended roping in postgraduate students, pooling of resources of hospitals and cash incentives to address the problem of shortage of staff in hospitals amid a surge in coronavirus cases, sources said. The two-member committee, comprising Dr Mahesh Verma, vice-chancellor of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Dr BL Sherwal, director, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, was formed last week.
UP: The number of Covid-19 cases might increase in Uttar Pradesh after a campaign to test people starts from Thursday, but it will certainly help in reducing deaths, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said
Maharashtra: As mnay as 4,938 police personnel in Maharashtra have tested positive for coronavirus so far and 60 of them have succumbed to the viral infection, home minister Anil Deshmukh said. He said 38 of the 60 deceased were from the Mumbai Police force.
Karnataka: Bodies of Covid-19 victims would not be laid to rest in burial grounds in the city and a separate place will be earmarked on the outskirts in the backdrop of safety concerns raised by public, Karnataka health minister B Sriramulu said. Two acres of land will be identified for this purpose on the outskirts, he said.
Kerala: The Covid-19 tally in Kerala crossed the 4,500 mark with 151 people testing positive as chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan cautioned that the state may have to face "more challenges" in the coming days.
HP: Eleven more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Himachal Pradesh, taking the coronavirus tally in the state to 965.
Sikkim: Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang announced a one-time incentive for doctors, nurses and other health workers in appreciation of their service in combating Covid-19 pandemic in the state. The doctors will be given Rs 20,000, while the nursing staff and support staff will get Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively.
Assam: Assam recorded 140 new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally in the state to 8,547. Out of the 140 new cases, 122 are from Guwahati city, which is under complete lockdown for 14 days since June 28.
MP: More than three months after downing their shutters during the Covid-19 lockdown, shopping malls in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district resumed operations. Malls were now permitted to remain open between 9 am to 8 pm with precautionary measures in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Andhra: Addition of 657 fresh cases pushed the Covid-19 tally in Andhra Pradesh to 15,252. In the last 24 hours, six coronavirus deaths were reported, taking the overall toll in the state to 193.
Goa: Tourism minister Manohar Ajgaonkar announced that the coastal state will be open to tourists starting July 2, as 250 hotels have been granted permission to resume operations.

West Bengal: Fifteen inmates of a prison in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have tested positive for Covid-19. The infected inmates of the Baruipur Central Correctional Home are asymptomatic and have been admitted to an isolation ward of the prison hospital.
Tripura: The Tripura government has announced a 24-hour complete lockdown on Sunday to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19.
Rajasthan: Rajasthan recorded 78 fresh cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of infections to 18,092. The coronavirus toll in Rajasthan stands at 413.

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 511,312 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December. At least 10,509,550 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories.
The United States is the worst-hit country with 127,425 deaths from 2,636,538 cases. At least 720,631 people have been declared recovered.
China has reported just three new confirmed cases of coronavirus, all in the capital Beijing where an outbreak last month appears to have run its course amid intense testing and case tracing.
No new deaths were reported in China, leaving the toll at 4,634 among 83,534 cases of Covid-19 recorded since the virus was first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.
Nepal has registered 482 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide Covid-19 tally to 14,046. Thirty people have died due to the coronavirus. The virus has spread to all 77 districts of Nepal.
A 44-year-old permanent resident of Singapore, who returned from India, has tested positive for the Covid-19, the health ministry said as the country reported 215 new coronavirus cases, including 205 foreign workers living in dormitories.
Bangladesh has extended restrictions imposed on public activities and movement across the country until August 3 to contain the spread of the coronavirus as the number of positive cases rose to 1,45,483 and the death toll reached 1,847.
