NEW DELHI: The housing ministry on Wednesday cancelled the allotment of government bungalow allotted to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and asked her to vacate the bungalow by August 1 following the withdrawal of her SPG protection.
“Consequent upon withdrawal of SPG protection and grant of Z+ security cover by MHA, which does not provision for allotment or retention of government accommodation on security grounds to you, the allotment of type 6B house no 35 Lodhi Estate is hereby cancelled w.e.f. July 1. One month concessional period on same rent till August 1, 2020 is allowed as per rules," the letter issued to the Congress leader said.
The ministry said any stay beyond August 1 will attract penal rents as per rules.
Sources said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had informed it on June 30 that she has been assigned Z plus security with CRPF cover on all-India basis, which does not have any provision for allotment or retention of government accommodation on that ground. She is also no more an SPG protectee.
Ministry sources said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has made online payment of balance amout due on her. Hence, now dues as on June 30 against her is nil.
The bungalow was allotted to her on February 21, 1997 on security ground as an SPG protectee.
Sources added that the Cabinet Committee on Accommodation (CCA), the apex body on approving allotment of government accommodation, in its meeting held December 12, 2000 had reviewed the guidelines on allotment of such accommodation on security ground and had decided that in future no private person, other than those who are SPG protectees, shall be given government accommodation on security ground.
It was also decided that such allotments were to be done at the market rate, which is 50 times of normal rent. Later in July 2003, it was decided to reduce the special rate of licence fee to 20 times of the normal rent from such allottees.
