The TN government on Monday announced extension of the general lockdown until July 31 with an aim to contain the Covid-19 surge. The government also extended the ongoing intense lockdown in Greater Chennai, including parts of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, besides Madurai corporation until July 5.
*TASMAC wine shops in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts bordering Puducherry are witnessing a spike in liquor sale after the Union Territory increased the prices of alcoholic beverages. Puducherry government increased its liquor price by 120 % a month ago with the fee matching the MRP of alcohol sold at wine shops in Tamil Nadu.

*The time taken for Covid-19 deaths to double in Tamil Nadu is now less compared to the doubling period for fresh cases – a grim trend that doctors and health authorities are desperate to reverse.
*On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu added 60 deaths with the toll reaching 1,201. The fatality rate – deaths over total cases – stood at 1.3% compared to 0.6-0.7% in May.
*Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 tally breached the 90,000-mark with 3,943 new infections reported on Tuesday. Sixty more deaths in the last 24 hours pushed the state’s toll to 1,201. On a positive note, the number of people discharged after treatment crossed 50,000, a recovery rate of 55%.
*Tuesday’s Covid-19 statistics released by Greater Chennai Corporation revealed two bright spots as well as three dark ones, as far as zonal level changes are concerned.
*Royapuram and Tondiarpet zones, which have the highest Covid-19 cases and continue to remain hotspots, have notched up 70% recovery rates up until now. While 71% of Tondiarpet Covid-19 patients have recovered, the rate is 70 % in Royapuram.
