This video grab shows workers in PPE suits dumping a Covid-19 victim’s body in a pit in Ballari.
BALLARI: Shocking visuals of bodies of Covid-19 victims in Ballari being dragged, hurled and dumped in a pit have triggered outrage and calls for action against the staff for dishonouring the dead. The deputy commissioner apologised to the families of the deceased and said a probe has been ordered. The team that carried out the burial has been disbanded.
Health minister B Sriramulu, who is from Ballari, condemned the "inhumane burial". "It is our culture and tradition to perform the last rites with proper respect and regard. Do not show any disrespect to the patients who die of Covid-19. Show humanity," he tweeted. Sriramulu added that the staff involved have been suspended.
After a video of the burial went viral on Tuesday, an inquiry was carried out by additional deputy commissioner PS Manjunath.
