2003 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Concept Goes Up For Auction Next Week

If your Ford Mustang collection is missing a centerpiece, you might want to pay attention as Barrett-Jackson is auctioning the Mustang GT Convertible concept which debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show.

Designed to preview the fifth-generation pony car, the concept features a stylish front fascia that closely mirrors the production model. The concept also has a ram air hood, bulging wheel arches and streamlined bodywork.

Elsewhere, there’s a short windshield and 20-inch wheels that are backed up by a high-performance Brembo braking system. The concept also has side scoops, a distinctive “sport” bar and a unique rear end which hinted at the upcoming production model.

Moving into the cabin, there’s red leather seats with harnesses featuring the Mustang logo. The model also has bespoke gauges, billet aluminum trim and toggle switches.

Since concepts are mostly just for show, the car is based on a heavily modified Ford Thunderbird. It features a sectioned chassis as well as a unique front-end suspension geometry.

Given it started out as a T-Bird, it’s probably not surprising to learn the concept is powered by 3.9-liter V8 engine instead of the Mustang’s 4.6-liter V8. The listing doesn’t say how powerful the engine is but, in the Thunderbird, it was rated at 252 hp (188 kW / 255 PS) and 267 lb-ft (362 Nm) of torque. Regardless, it’s connected to a five-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels.

The concept is being auctioned off online and bidding starts on July 6th. There’s no estimate, but the car was originally auctioned by Ford in 2009 and has resurfaced a few times since then.
