New Delhi: Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India chairman
RS Sharma on Monday said dumping of products by other countries must be countered with
preferential market access policy to provide opportunities to local manufacturers of equipment and handsets in the “sensitive” telecom sector.
Sharma said government policies relating to electronics and local handset manufacturing have “paid rich dividends” and that more needs to be done, particularly to push
domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment and ensure value addition. “Unless we provide opportunities for our own domestic players, we will not go anywhere,” said Sharma.
“Countries have strategies where they actually dump things, try to kill the domestic industry and then raise prices... We need to realise these tactics and appropriately give preferential market access policy, which has been there... we need to ensure we implement it,” said Sharma at a PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry webinar.
