Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has strongly suggested manager Jurgen Klopp will not have too much to work with in the transfer window.

The Reds were one of a handful of clubs who moved to place their non-playing staff on furlough leave when the government’s job retention scheme was brought in.

But while a public backlash forced owners FSG to reverse the decision, it's clear their finances have been badly hit by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool recently pulled out of a deal to sign Timo Werner over the costs involved. Furthermore, a report earlier this year claimed plans to expand Anfield’s capacity had also been shelved.

Since signing Alisson in a £66.8 million deal from Roma in summer 2018, Liverpool are yet to spend over £10 million on any player.

Indeed, Klopp's biggest outlay in the three windows since was the £7.25 million capture of Takumi Minamino.

Now Werner, in an exclusive with the Liverpool Echo, has suggested a quiet summer lies ahead.

"I would just say, you know, I was told early on about the importance of a virtuous circle," Werner said.

"So, it was very important when we came in that the commercial revenues of the club increased so we had financial stability.

"And I think that, as everyone knows, we haven't taken a pound out as a dividend. Every pound we invest in future talent on the pitch.

"In the short term we are in a challenging situation because of Covid-19. We've had a lot of conversations about how to manage through this challenging period.

"We have a great squad and as you know we are investing in a new training ground and I just want to get through this period.

"I am terribly challenged by what is going on with the coronavirus, as is the world.

"My dream at the moment is to see Anfield filled with so many supporters. That sort is what I am thinking about today."

Indeed, the Express claims there are likely to be more outgoing players than incoming at Liverpool this summer.

They report Adam Lallana will leave on a free transfer while Dejan Lovren and Xherdan Shaqiri are also likely to be sold.

Furthermore, it's claimed decisions will be made whether to sell Harry Wilson or Marko Grujic after successful loans.
