Panaji/Sankhali: Considering the gravity of the rising COVID positive cases in Sankhali, the government on Tuesday decided to declare Bhandarwado as a containment zone and Desai Nagar  as micro containment zone in the town.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who represents the Sankhali assembly constituency, told media persons at his official residence that the government directed the authorities to declare Bhandarwado as a containment zone and Desai Nagar as micro containment zone.

On Tuesday, Sankhali recorded three more COVID cases.

Earlier, Sawant chaired a review meeting on the COVID situation in the town, discussing issues pertaining to the rise in coronavirus cases.

The meeting was attended by Sankhali municipal council chairperson Yeshwant Madkar, all councillors, chief officer Pravinjay Pandit, health officer Dr Uttam Desai and others.

Sawant asked the civic body to adopt preventive measures to keep community transmission at bay.

Consequently the SMC decided to seal all playgrounds and parks located in the Sankhali municipal jurisdiction for the next two weeks. All sports activities will also be banned.

The Sankhali Traders Association appealed to shopkeepers to reopen their business establishments by following the social distancing norm.

The SMC will initiate stringent action if a person fails to maintain the social distancing norm at public places. A special squad will be constituted, consisting of a market inspector and police personnel, to enforce the social distancing norm in the SMC jurisdiction and initiate action against the offenders.
