COIMBATORE: A 25-year-old constable attached to the armed reserve police in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu, who was deployed at a check post, was fatally run over by a container truck on Monday night. The truck had earlier hit another check post and a sport utility vehicle in Erode district, Tirupur superintendent of police Disha Mittal told TOI.
The deceased has been identified as T Prabhu of Kallapalayam near Gudimangalam in Tirupur district.
On Monday night, Loganathan, a head constable attached to Kangeyam police station, and constable Prabhu were deployed at Thittuparai police check post.
A container truck hit the check post barricade and sped away. Prabhu started to chase the truck on a motorcycle. He didn’t wear helmet.
Prabhu overtook the truck and asked the driver to stop the vehicle. However, the truck driver ran over the cop and escaped.
The truck took a U-turn and went back to Erode district.
The truck was stopped by a team of police at Odanilai near Arachalur in Erode district. Police secured truck driver B Baskaran, 40, of Vilamarathur in Ramanathapuram district. The truck driver was taken to a government hospital to detect whether he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.
The Tirupur SP said truck had earlier damaged a police check post in Erode district and hit an SUV. The truck driver had a wordy duel with the SUV driver and escaped from the place. The public alerted police control room and tried to chase the truck.
“The truck driver drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and he was about to hit a petrol bunk too,” she said.
