BENGALURU: Medical education minister K Sudhakar on Monday revealed Bengaluru now constitutes 26% of total cases in the state, but insisted there is neither community transmission nor a threat of it as yet in the state.
In a series of tweets, the minister, once at the helm of the fight, said the state’s recovery rate stood at a healthy 57%, while mortality rate was only 1.6%, about half the national rate of 3%. “Bengaluru had 1556 #COVID19 cases as on Jun 23 which has doubled to 3419 cases as on Jun 28,” the minister said in one tweet.
He took pains to deny suggestions that the state had slipped into community transmission phase. Community transmission means the source of infection in people is unknown — people with neither travel history or contact with an infected people contract the virus. “At present, cases in Karnataka are largely those coming from outside the state and we know their source of infection,” he said.
Back in action today
Sudhakar has been on the sidelines of the fight against the virus over the past week. He has been in home isolation after a cook and several members of his family tested positive. Now that he has completed seven days in home quarantine, he will return to work on Tuesday.
“I am fully fit and raring to go. My family members are also doing fine and they are expected to be discharged by Wednesday,” said Sudhakar, who is officially designated as the in-charge of all Covid 19- related matters in the capital city.
He said the seven-day break was fruitful since he had plenty of time to draw up a new or alternate plan to fight the epidemic.
“I will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about my plans and seek his consent to implement it. It will be a revolutionary strategy,” said the minister, who is a doctor by education. He said he would reveal his plans on Tuesday.
Sudhakar will resume work by participating in a meeting with representatives of private hospitals convened by chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday. During his absence, CM Yediyurappa had appointed revenue minister R Ashoka in his place.
Asked what he would do if Yediyurappa persisted with Ashoka as Covid-19 chief, Sudhakar said, “Ashoka was a stop-gap arrangement. I am officially designated as Covid-19 in-charge of Bengaluru with consent from the governor and I will continue to hold the post.”
