A Jonas Brothers reunion and Game of Thrones finale later, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas still toe the line between relatable and relationship goals. Through their successful individual careers, a two-year-long relationship, two wedding celebrations and a pregnancy, the power couple has managed to keep things humorous and unscripted on social media feeds. On the duo’s first anniversary, we are taking a look back at the pair's surprisingly normal (and very millennial) love story and all the images, from the bride’s white wedding gown to their pet in a tux, along with behind-the-scenes details from their star-studded nuptials in France that you might have missed earlier.

How Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas met

Just like brother Nick Jonas messaged Priyanka Chopra on Twitter, Joe Jonas slid into Sophie Turner’s DMs on social media. "We had a lot of mutual friends and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time. We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue,” the actor explained in an interview about their first interaction in 2016. When Jonas sent her the message asking if she wanted to hang out, he was on tour in the United Kingdom. The 24-year-old star, who was based in Camden, thought, “he could be a catfish—or I don't know what.” So, she tagged a few of her guy friends along, as the location Jonas recommended wasn't exactly a typical celebrity haunt. "It was just this local shitty bar, dirty, with great music and people throwing up everywhere," Turner said. "It was that kind of place. Kind of like the worst, but also kind of the best."

But as fate planned, that night the couple hit it off instantly. "He brought a friend, and they drank just as hard as the rest of us," she revealed. "I remember the two of us spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we just found a space far in the corner and we just talked. We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I was, like, not bored. It wasn't contrived. It wasn't small talk—it was just so easy. And soon we were, like, inseparable. I went on tour with him." The couple made their first public appearance together in May 2017 at the MET Gala. In October that year, Jonas proposed to Turner and shared the happy news with a ring selfie.

The elopement in Vegas

Two hours after the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, 2019, Sophie Turner, 23, and Joe Jonas, 29, wed at Chapel L’Amour inside Las Vegas’s Little White Wedding Chapel. Although the nuptials seemed like a hush-hush affair, they had applied for their marriage license earlier that day. The couple tied the knot before a full house, which included sisters-in-law Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas, DJ Diplo (who documented the affair on Instagram) and Dan + Shay (who performed ‘Speechless’ as Turner walked down the aisle). Turner wore an ivory Bevza silk jumpsuit and veil for the special occasion, while fiancé Jonas waited for his bride at the altar beside his brothers and best men, Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas. A Vegas wedding is incomplete without an Elvis Presley impersonator, who officiated the ceremony, and the night also featured a photoshoot upon a Pink Cadillac and with ring pops, not wedding rings. “What happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas,” Jonas later joked about it.

The pre-wedding celebrations in France

Although Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas turned to a quick ‘I Do’ in Vegas to make things official in America, their big, more conventional wedding was in June 2020. Ahead of the wedding, on June 28, #Jophie reportedly hosted a pre-wedding rehearsal dinner and party hosted at Hôtel La Mirande in Avignon, Provence. The celebration was attended by Kevin and Nick Jonas along with their wives Danielle and Priyanka Chopra, who turned to a strapless Honayda gown for the party. Turner's Game of Thrones co-star and BFF Maisie Williams was also part of the festivities as the maid of honour, along with her boyfriend Reuben. Ashley Graham and Justin Ervin also joined in. The couple turned up in colour-coordinated ensembles—Turner wore a floor-length red sheath gown with silver high-heeled sandals, while her husband complemented her in a red suit. The rest of the guests turned up in an all-white dress code.

The formal white wedding in France

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas, who live their lives in the spotlight, celebrated their big day in privacy—and in style. On June 29, 2020, the two hosted a ceremony at Château de Tourreau, an 18-century private estate turned five-star property in the Provence region. Flowers, glass candles and touches of gold in the decor set the scene for the star-studded nuptials, while English singer Calum Scott sang his ballad ‘You Are the Reason’ at the wedding.

"Joe and Sophie both teared up while reading their vows. Everyone stood and cheered and they had huge smiles as they left as a couple. It was an emotional ceremony," a report stated. A cheerful highlight of their wedding, though, was definitely their dog Porky, who was not only attendance but was kitted out in a dog tuxedo. Post a heartfelt ceremony, the groom’s brothers, Nick and Kevin took turns giving toasts to the happy couple. As a nod to Joe’s American background, there were crates and crates of Coors Light lager at the reception, printed with custom labels reading “Joe + Sophie 2019”. Sister-in-law Priyanka Chopra eschewed contemporary pieces in favour of a blush Sabyasachi sari for the nuptials.

The wedding couture

The bride wore a classic white gown by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton, given that she is one of the faces of the luxury fashion house. The gown featured sheer fitted sleeves and a full skirt covered in delicate lace. The silk gazar and tulle gown took over 350 hours to execute by countless seamstresses in the house’s designated workshop, the Atelier Rare & Exceptionnel reserved for celebrities and couture clientele in Place Vendôme, Paris. With the gown, Turner wore a lace-trimmed veil dotted with white appliqués and a bouquet of flowers, with no visible jewellery. The groom wore an all-black Berluti tuxedo designed by the label's artistic director, Kris van Assche.
